Purple Quill Literary Society records, 1928-1955.

The collection contains the society's newsletter, Scrivenings, 1929-1945; correspondence; newspaper clippings about active Quill members and accomplishments of alumni members, 1930-1945; materials written by Quills (valedictory addresses, poetry, short stories, essays, spontaneous writings at meetings); and organizational and administrative materials (scripts from Quill radio shows, financial records, membership roster, meeting notes), and a 1955 reunion folder. Also includes a book plate engraving block, ink jars, and Quill pens.

Purple Quill Literary Society evolved from the first class in English Composition, Essay Writing, in Spring 1928 at Penn State. The honor society limited membership to fifteen students and fifteen faculty who would meet informally to evaluate each other's written work. Membership declined by 1935 and sporadic attempts to revive the group included adding alumni and faculty whose post-college careers demonstrated their eligibility for membership had the society been active during their college day...

The Pennsylvania Humanities Council designated the year 1985 as "The Year of the Pennsylvania Writer." The PHC funded projects in eight locations throughout the Commonwealth to gain appreciation, understanding, and recognition for past and present Pennsylvania writers. The State College/University Park location held a two-stage conference and related events by five Centre County regional organizations.
